The Ukrainian-Russian border that was open to people and goods is now closing on the lives and livelihoods of people in Ukraine’s besieged Crimean-freed city of Kherson. Kherson, the 22nd largest city with a population of 200,000 and the main port of Ukraine in the Black Sea, is a historic center of Cossack culture. For the last three months, Kherson has been under an undeclared total blockade from the Russian authorities, forcing it to hold primarily on farming and fishing. Ihor Kolykhaiev is a Ukrainian politician, who serves as Mayor of the city of Kherson. He holds unusual views on Ukraine’s internal affairs and opposes the participation in the Kyiv-led anti-terrorist operation (ATO) in the east of Ukraine. Is the Mayor of Kherson? What will happen to the city now that he has announced that the city has fallen to Russia? Kherson is located in Southern Ukraine on the Dniester river. The population of Kherson is approximately 400,000 people. The city’s economy is largely reliant on shipping as it is a river port. The Mayor of Kherson, Ukraine has tweeted a confirmation that Russia has taken the city without firing a shot – and he’s calling on the Ukrainian military to stand down. This is huge news – for two reasons.

First, because it comes from someone who really should know – the mayor. Normally statements like this would come from either pro-Russian Ukrainian separatists bordering Crimea or perhaps some drunk guy at a bar or a tourist in Moscow who overheard something. Ihor Kolykhaiev, the Mayor of Kherson, declared on his Facebook page that the city “has fallen under Russian control.” In his statement, he says that the election of a new Mayor of Kherson, Volodymyr Mykolayenko, has failed as scheduled. A team from Ukraine’s junta leader Poroshenko’s party refused to participate in the vote. Meanwhile, protestors are enjoying the results by loudly singing and chanting pro-Russia slogans.
